Mission Hills High School (MHHS) took on San Marcos High School (SMHS) in the yearly Discovery Bowl matchup. With a four game win streak behind them, Mission Hills is looking to complete their goal of being five to zero in the second half of the season. This matchup between the Grizzlies and Knights has been one of the most iconic rivalries in San Diego, dating since the opening of Mission Hills in 2004. Within this rivalry—Mission Hills has had the upper hand, leading the series 15 to three. The Grizzlies look to make it 16 to three with a win against San Marcos.
“Some advice I would give to younger players is to have goals, stay focused and work hard at them. You can do anything that you work hard for. Enjoy it [football], don’t take it for granted because you learn so much from it and you never know when your last time playing will be so enjoy every moment and the great friendships that come from being a part of a team.” said senior Andy Devine.
The Mission Hills football team is a family and have shown their tight bond on the field. Along with a close connection, they are all super competitive and this looked to use it to their advantage going into the game against San Marcos. With that, they did exactly what they planned to do and won against San Marcos in dominating fashion 45 to zero. They were able to come together and play as one, and it was thanks to preparation throughout the week.
“No matter what anyone tries to tell you, you can do it. You can always be one percent better every day!” said senior Santiago Salas.
This win for the Grizzlies is huge as not only do they complete their five and zero streak, but they can now go into the playoffs with a winning streak behind them. The Grizzlies have a bye week for the first round of playoffs because they are the first seed and this means they will play St. Augustine, home on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:15pm.
Support for the Grizzlies could not be any higher and as a Mission Hills family, we support the football team throughout all battles. Let’s go far into the playoffs Grizzlies and goodluck!
