MHHS soccer is a force to be reckoned with. The freshman girls team recently finished their season completely undefeated after playing a total of 14 games. In order to accomplish this outstanding feat, the girls had to be on top of their game, but also have fun playing it. It all started when the team was selected just 10 days before their first game.
“We worked really well together from the start, and used our San Marcos competition to drive us,” freshman Holly Austin said.
After their first couple substantial wins, it became harder and harder for them to stay humble. As a team, they had to work together to remain level-headed and calm about their competition.
“Our mindset was that we had to come into every game prepared to have a tough battle,” freshman and defender Audrey Threatt said.
They did face some turbulence in two specific games—Carlsbad and Del Norte: they tied zero-zero against Carlsbad and three-three against Del Norte.
“I feel like our team could have definitely beaten them both. They were good teams and we tried our very best, but I feel like we should have put more of our opportunities away,” freshman and team captain Leah Folloso said.
Their ability to bounce back from these unfortunate games helped them refocus and recognize their hunger for the win.
“After every game we had, we realized the season wasn’t over yet, and there was still a lot of work that we needed to do,” Austin said.
Motivating and inspiring each other also helped them cross the finish with a clean sheet. Their four captains, Folloso, Joselyn Torres, Briana Trujillo, and Lynsey Phillips, were major factors in this.
“My role was to help the team prepare for upcoming games, and I would encourage all of them to do their best and move on from their mistakes,” Folloso said. “Because all soccer players make mistakes. But it is about how you come back from those mistakes that makes you a better player.”
