  • A major U.S. shooting occurred on Jan. 23 at a bank in Sebring, Fla. The attacker surrendered after reporting to the police, but not before he murdered at least five victims. The perpetrator is now in custody.
  • Opposition leader Juan Guadió of Venezuela became the acting president of the country this past week, as apart of the Opposition Party. He declared himself this role during the current president’s term in order to liberate the citizens from the leader’s injustice. Venezuela has been facing a downward economic crisis for several years, causing millions to flee the country as currency valued to nothing.
  • Light has been emitted on the government shutdown crisis, as Donald Trump agreed on a short-term funding bill to reopen the government. This bill does not include funding for the border wall, which the Republican party desired, but allows hundred of thousands of federal workers to begin their jobs once again. Donald Trump will look to lawmakers to find funding for the border wall, and may consider a national emergency if all else fails.
  • Controversy has surrounded the students of Covington Catholic High School during the March for Life in Washington D.C. The viral photo of a students in Make America Great Hats surrounding Native Americans caused upset nationally as many saw it as discrimination for the latter. However, voices from all sides have spoken, stating that the students were being harassed from a group of Hebrew Israelites and that after the students defended themselves with school chants, Native Americans from the Indigenous Peoples Movement intervened to calm the situation.
  • Social media collides in Facebook’s plan to integrate three of their messaging apps: Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp into one single app. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 or early next year, according to BBC. This strategy will support business communication and decrease competition within the three apps.
