A Comprehensive Update to Every Sport Played at MHHS

This year, all sports had to be played within one season. Athletes have been playing hard and having fun for these past couple of months, so we thought we would update our community with a result of a recent game each sport has played and each team’s current/ final record.

All season one sports (Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Swim, and Girls Volleyball) have officially concluded. We have a couple of season highlights for each of these sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Zapata.
Field Hockey: 3/23 Battled hard but ultimately lost to Mission Vista 12-1 in their last game of the season to bring their total record to 1-5. Here’s what Coach Zapata had to say about the season: “Our field hockey team showed grit, determination, and positivity despite a tough shortened season. Although they finished with a 1-5 record I am proud of how the ladies carried themselves through the ups and downs.”
Football: 4/17 The football team collectively routed SMHS 50-6 to end their football season. The team ended with a record of 5-0, ranked 3rd in the county, and 22nd in the state. “Football was named league champion and had 15 athletes receive all-league honors: 1st team – Skai Donnell (12), Troy Faulkner (12), Gunnar Hensley (11), Jaiden Letua (11), Thomas Marron (12), Matt Martin (11). 2nd team – Tyson Chavez (12), Peter Eyabi (11), Riley Fountain (12), Ricky Williams (12). 3rd Team – Torin Duffin (12), Jordan Dwyer (11), Ben Eyer (11), Christian Ponce (12), Canaan Ridill (11). Honorable mentions for Caden Willis (12), John Istvanyi (12), Aslan Pagakis (12), Etmael Mendoza (12).”
Cross Country: 3/19 The team had their final North County meet to cap off their outstanding season. The boys team ended up going 3-2 on the season and the girls ended their season at 5-0. “We had 9 athletes recognized for all-league honors: 1st Team – Julia Ferreira (9), Taylor Hoffmeister (10), Anne Tedrow (11), Daniel Krough (12), Joel Ras (9). 2nd Team – Erin Goode (11), Kylie Schultz (9), Austin O’Very (9), Devan Sim (12).”
Swim and Dive: 4/24 All members of the swim team had their final meet of the year on Saturday, April 24th. When it was all said and done the boys squad had a final record of 4-2-1(tie), and the girls team went 5-2. Both teams had great seasons! “Ethan Hildesheim (12) broke the 100 breaststroke school record with a :55.68 and got second at CIF. Audrey Reynolds (10) set a school record with :59.92 in the 100 backstroke and was also league champ. Abby Sheehan (11) finished second in league for the 100 breaststroke. Quinton Gutierrez (10) finished second in league in the 100 backstroke.”
Girls Volleyball: 4/30 The Lady Grizzlies lost in 3 sets against Poway, but have overall been battling hard every game. “Our girls volleyball team finished the shortened season with a record of 2-6 (1-3 in league). Girls volleyball had 2 players receive all-league honors: 1st team – Cameron Swanson (11). 2nd team – Olivia Morgan (11).”
Great job to all of the season one athletes and congratulations on having great seasons! “Currently, our season 2 sports are in full swing, with many of them in the thick of their seasons. The season 2 sports are: Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys Golf, Girls Golf, Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Softball, coed Tennis, Track & Field, Boys Volleyball, Boys Water Polo, Girls Water Polo, and Wrestling.” said Coach Zapata.
Baseball: 4/28 Won against Del Norte 7-3. The team now has a record of 8-7 with thirteen games left to go.
Boys Basketball: 5/11 Won against Escondido 61-50. The team’s record is now 12-4, with only a few games left until playoffs.
Girls Basketball: 4/24 won against Mira Mesa 87-11. Team’s record is now 8-2
Cheer: Cheer has done a fantastic job cheering on numerous sports.
Dance: The dance team went to Nationals and ended up coming home with first place in the Hip-Hop dance category.
Boys Golf: 4/22 Lost a very close match against San Marcos. The team’s current record is 5-6 with eight matches to go.
Girls Golf: The girls golf team is currently 4-10; their lowest score of the season so far is 263 as a team which is just outstanding.
Boys Lacrosse: 5/1 Came up short 18 to 5 against valley center. The team’s record is 1-5.
Girls Lacrosse: 4/19 Lost 13-18 in a hard fought match against San Dieguito Academy. The girls’ current record is 2-4 with six games to go.
Boys Soccer: 4/29 Won against Valley Center 4-2. The team currently has a record of 6-4-1(tie)
Girls Soccer: 4/30 Won against RBV. The team is currently undefeated going 7-0-2 thus far. Their next game is at home on Tuesday, 5/11, against Fallbrook. This is going to be one you don’t want to miss as the grizzlies are looking to close out the season with a league champ
Softball: 4/27 won against El Camino 5-3, 4/28 won against Westview 5-3. The team’s current record is 11-3 with 12 more games to play.
Tennis: 4/22 Won against RBV 14-3. The team’s record is now 9-3 with only a few games left to go.
Track: 5/6 Heavily outscored Fallbrook at their meet on Thursday. Our track stars have been doing great this season!
Boys Volleyball: 5/3 Spiked Ramona 3-0. The team’s record is now 6-7 with just three games left to go. The boys are in contention for a league title if they finish strong!

Boys Water Polo: 4/28 The boys had their first game against El Camino. They won 21-7. They are now 3-1 with a whole season ahead of them.
Girls Water Polo: 4/28 lost against El Camino 16-1. The team’s record is now 0-1 with 13 games left to go. Their next game is Thursday 5/6 against RBHS.
Wrestling: 5/7 Won their match decisively. Their record is now 1-2 with the majority of their season ahead of them.
