Trying to get started in climbing can be stressful for a new climber. In actuality, picking out the right gear is simple for beginner climbers. There are a few different indoor climbing gyms in San Marcos, such as Mesa Rim North City, Vertical Hold and The Wall Climbing Gym. The essentials for climbers are typically climbing shoes, a harness, a belay device and chalk.
In an interview with Luke French, they were asked what got them into climbing, why they like to climb and what their favorite type of climbing is.
“I went to a climbing gym with a friend and realized I was pretty naturally good at it and I really enjoyed it. I like climbing because of the community, the challenge and because it gets me involved in nature. I like bouldering and trad (traditional); I enjoy bouldering because it builds my strength and I like climbing trad because you get to climb big mountains, test your endurance and see really beautiful landscapes,” said French.
To get started, the first type of gear needed for climbing is shoes. Rental climbing shoes are almost always provided by the facility. A few brands that offer good quality climbing shoes are Scarpa, La Sportiva, Tenya, Evolv and more. According to the Scarpa webpage, the Scarpa Helix provides a “highly adjustable lace-up construction, padded tongue and relatively symmetrical profile.” This shoe also includes that “Vibram® XS Edge provides incredible grip and durability.” It’s a good all-round shoe that is great for every style of climbing, from slabs to overhangs and roofs.
The next thing to look into is a harness. Most climbing gyms provide harnesses to rent or buy. Some brands to consider choosing from are Black Diamond, Petzl, C.A.M.P., Edelrid and Metolius. Harnesses are relatively inexpensive depending on the brand, they last a long time and take many years to wear down or need replacing.
A belay device is only needed for top roping and lead climbing, so it is not essential for every climber. Some brands that are reliable to use are Petzl, Edelrid, Black Diamond, Beal and Mammut. These devices last a long time, so they don’t need replacing very often.
The last thing that is essential to performance is chalk. Chalk comes in a liquid or powder form. It absorbs moisture to create better friction on your hands. Chalk brands to try are Metolius, FrictionLabs, Bison Designs, and Black Diamond.
In an interview with Jason Graves, they were asked how much of a difference chalk makes and what their preferred kind of chalk is.
“Chalk is extremely important because it keeps your hands dry and provides added friction. I haven’t felt much of a difference using multiple types of chalk so I just go with whatever is cheapest,” Graves said.
Always climb with a partner who has experience. Some climbing gyms provide classes to further understand safety and techniques. Most climbers are supportive of new climbers, so don’t be afraid of being judged.
