The fifth Silvertip Athlete of the Week is senior Lindsey Jones. Jones is a girl’s basketball player for Mission Hills, and she has been at Mission Hills since her sophomore year. After she transferred her sophomore year from our neighbors at San Marcos High School, Jones had only great things to say about the Mission Hills Girls Basketball Program.
“Here, it’s a lot more competitive; we’re just a lot better. We’re a lot closer, and we wanna win a lot more,” Jones says.
Jones started basketball in the fourth grade, and her enjoyment of the sport carried all the way to now. Watching college basketball also propelled her interest.
“I also watched a lot of San Diego State men’s basketball games, so I already really liked it,” Jones shares.
Jones was also asked about her favorite part of her team specifically.
“We’re really close, and we all have the same desire to win—and win championships,” Jones said.
She shared that something special about her team is that they hold each other accountable.
“We’re not afraid to push each other to be better and say something,” Jones said.
This value of accountability is just one aspect that makes the girl’s basketball team one of the best athletic teams on campus. When asked if her team is on track to secure the CIF Open Division Championship, Jones said yes instantly.
Jones considers her entire team to be her sisters. However, she gave shoutouts to a couple of her teammates.
“Mariah Brown and Izzy Medina. We’re just super close,” Jones said.
Coach Kroesch is the head coach for the Girl’s Basketball team, and Jones reports only good things about her coach.
“He’s paying attention to the little details and it makes us aware of it, [which] makes us better,” Jones said.
When asked about what she does outside of her sport, Jones kept it simple.
“I mean I spend a lot of time with training and weightlifting and stuff, but outside of that I just kind of hangout with friends [and] spend time with my family and stuff like that,” Jones said.
Although she is a dedicated athlete at Mission Hills, Jones also stays on top of her schoolwork. As an AP student, she was asked how she manages to balance being a student-athlete.
“I just always make sure to make time for school, because it’s important to get good grades,” Jones said. “Over the weekends I’ll spend hours on homework.”
Jones has a bright future ahead of her. She is committed to continuing her education and also playing basketball at Colorado School of Mines next year.
You can support Lindsey and the rest of Girl’s Basketball in the Open Division Playoffs as they make their way to a CIF Championship.
