SMUSD closes all schools in an attempt to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in San Marcos

On March 12, the San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) released a statement saying all extracurricular activities would be canceled until March 31, but on the morning of Friday, March 13, as students began their school day, they were informed of school closures across the district starting Monday, March 16.

Schools are set to reopen on April 13, the day that students were supposed to return from their spring recess, but parents and students anticipate a formal statement that will be issued later today by the district confirming the plan of action. This is also subject to change as an extension could follow if the environment calls for more precaution.

The list of school districts that will be closed can be found on NBC 7 along with when they are scheduled to reopen. It reads as follows:

It is important to note that many communal gatherings may be postponed or canceled due to the public health orders made on March 12.

The San Diego County Public Health Officer issued orders prohibiting all public or private “large gatherings” and restricting all non-essential personnel from entry into any hospital or long-term care facility serving seniors.
