At Mission Hills High School, the California Scholarship Federation, or CSF, is a program that students join to earn community service hours, as there are many benefits in doing so. However, some are confused by how to get those hours, but a few students have talked about what they do as a part of CSF.
“I joined CSF in my freshman year and since then my favorite way to get community service hours is helping out at my church,” senior Hannah Litchfield said.
Litchfield loves helping out at her church, somewhere she shared she goes constantly. Once she entered high school and joined CSF, she knew she could earn hours there and enjoy it. Following in her footsteps, it is easy to earn community service hours from a regularly visited place, whether it be for a religious reason or for relaxation and fun. However, CSF hours can be earned through other programs at school as well.
“I’m in Key Club, which is also a community service-focused club, and at MHHS, we can usually count hours used at clubs for CSF as well, so I plan on earning my hours this semester through that,” sophomore Kelly Pham said.
Pham isn’t the only one who plans on earning community service hours via other clubs. Many other students do the same, as it allows them to be part of multiple programs at school and still reach their goal of getting the necessary amount of hours needed for CSF.
“I’m interested in many clubs like crochet club, one stitch at a time, and helping paws that provide opportunities to earn community service hours, so I plan on using those for CSF as well,” said freshman Camille Fischer.
There are many clubs besides the ones previously mentioned in which chances are provided to earn hours that can count for CSF, so that is a popular tactic students use to meet the minimum of six hours for CSF. Earning community service hours might sound like a lot of work, but in reality, it doesn’t have to be.
Participating in things that are already helping one earn hours is quite common, so don’t be afraid to participate in CSF as it will only broaden opportunities for the future. If not currently enrolled in CSF, applications for upcoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors open up in the summer for the next school year so keep an eye out!
