One question at MHHS has been puzzling students for a great deal of time: why are the upstairs bathrooms always closed? This could be an issue for some students when it comes to breaking the long line. There are students who sometimes struggle with actually being able to go to the bathroom during break because of how long the lines are during their free time. While it may affect the students in a certain way, there has to be a reason why things are the way they are. The principal may have a good reason for those upstairs bathrooms being closed.
“The lines at the downstairs bathrooms are so long that sometimes I wait the whole break and I’m not able to go,” said David Cruz. “It would be beneficial to have the upstairs bathrooms open because it would reduce wait time and cause less students to leave for the bathroom during class.”
Leaving the classroom during class proves to be an issue because there is either a student already gone, or their teacher isn’t letting them go.
“They are usually supposed to be open during break but it depends on the situation,’ said principal Nathan Baker. “The kind of things that would prompt the bathrooms to be closed during break include maintenance, vandalism and if there is a huge mess. During lunch, the bathrooms upstairs are always off-limits. They are closed for security reasons and the only reason students should be upstairs is to go work in a classroom; otherwise, the entire upstairs area should be off limits.”
To conclude, while some students feel like the bathrooms should be open, there is a good reason as to why they may not be sometimes. When they are closed, the staff does it for our safety and to make sure they are not of terrible quality for the students. The staff always have the safety of their students in mind whenever they make such a decision. Hopefully this makes students appreciate all the work that the staff at our school do for us even if that means that the bathrooms have to be closed sometimes.
