What makes phones distracting to students? Is it checking a notification, is it boredom during class or just in general very addicting. Phones have become a major part of students’ lives along with being their number one source of communication. Have cell phones become so addicting that it affects academic performance?
“Whenever I am in class and I am trying to do my school work, I feel like my phone is vibrating and I try to use it,” senior Remy Escobar said. “I am still learning with my phone; it just can be a distraction at times to my education.”
Throughout class Remy will use his phone when he’s bored, and at times he misses the lectures or instructions and is left clueless about what he’s doing.
Furthermore, senior Cole Khayat provides his more positive opinion on phones. “Phones should be allowed for specific reasons like emergencies and if websites are blocked, but make sure to listen.” Cole Khayat said.
Cole Khyat expressed that phones do not correlate with GPA because although they can be distracting, it’s up to the students if they want to pay attention. If students do not pay attention during class and choose to be on their cell phones instead of doing classwork, it can later on slowly diminish their grade.
Lastly, junior Brenda Hernandez elaborates on how phones can negatively impact a student during school hours, and even at home. “My phone distracts me all the time during class whether it’s a vibration or wanting to watch Tiktok while being bored. Not only does it affect me in class but also at home when I am trying to complete an assignment for a class.”
Brenda explains that phones can be a serious issue especially when it comes to procrastination or boredom. Our generation is very into social media and it is tempting to try not to use your phone during any class, because we may have a urge to text our friends or do other things on it.
“Phones can be way too addicting at times that sometimes I even want to throw it away, but they are fun to be on,” says freshman Sherlyn Azpeitia.
