With the second semester of the year already underway, these months mark the last semester for seniors; this last stretch could mean new responsibilities and speeding up, in other words, putting more effort into their school work. Or alternatively, it could mean slowing down if seniors catch a sickness commonly known as senioritis.
“Ever since I came back from Junior year I said, ‘alright, this is my final time, my last time, my final year,’” said senior Kieran De Asis.
Senioritis is a so-called affliction in which seniors in high schools are characterized to have a decline in motivation and academic performance. Senioritis also seems to be a big factor in how seniors approach their final year at Mission Hills High School. This last stretch incentivizes students to make the most of their time remaining as a K-12 student. Senioritis may cause effort in education to not be at the top of the list for a student.
“Since it’s my last year—last semester—as a student in the K-12 school system, I intend to have more fun… enjoy this experience for the last time. But definitely I want to finish this last school year strong and not fumble the bag at the last second.” said senior Julio Robles.
Being in school comes with its perks of having fun: going to parties or being a part of clubs or events while also being around many familiar faces. Although, after high school, students’ plans may differ and branch out into career paths or into higher education. With this in mind, it can be said that senior students have the most experience in the K-12 education system, and with such experience they can give the advice that has weight due to first hand experience.
“I would say to lock in, as there’s not that much time left, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be trying your best,” Eric Kaufman said, a senior at Mission Hills High School.
