Opportunities for creativity at Mission Hills: The Experience of Metalsmithing and Ceramics
MHHS, a school that offers many extracurriculars for students to pursue, whether it be metalsmithing or ceramics, brings forth avenues for students to explore their interests.
Winter Break raises curiosity for electives that will be available next year, and metalsmithing is an elective sure to help any student find a way to engage their creativity. But schedule changes aren’t the only way to partake in these classes, the elective fair is occurring on Jan. 24th and metalsmithing will be there.
Metalsmithing teacher Alexis Archibald says that metalsmithing has kids use their hands to mend metal and make something new. She loves giving kids the experience of engaging with metal and the accomplishment of making something novel.
“You can make your own drip,” said Archibald.
This includes both rings and necklaces. Students can wear their own accessories made from class and feel confident doing so. The experience of working on a project over time and having it take form in wearable accessories is unmatched.
This class gives everyone their chance to learn and feel appreciated due Archibald’s individualistic teaching style. She can “shift her style depending on the student” and help each student to engage in new ideas and grow. So, not only will students be able to work with and form metal, but they can also be a part of a nurturing and positive environment. Creativity can be harbored and turned into something great, and metalsmithing is the ideal way for any student to find their creativity and use it for innovation.
However it’s not only metalsmithing where students define their creativity and explore new arts. Ceramics has become an increasingly popular elective where students shape and form clay.
“It’s a great place to make friends and explore my creativity, and it is a wonderful community,” said junior Patch Patrick. Students shape clay to what their heart desires, be it a bowl, candle holder, cup or statue. Ceramics is another great option for those seeking an engaging and fulfilling creative experience.
