Story by Maleah Moore, Management Editor

“I lived in Virginia. And I moved out of my mom’s house with my dad, who lives in California. I think the saddest moment of my life is seeing her break down in tears before I got on the plane. I didn’t have to move; I wanted to move. Virginia was not the place for me, obviously. I was from South Virginia, and it was very “one way.” There were rednecks and I just couldn’t fit in, so I knew I had to move. Growing up in Virginia, I knew that I wanted to do fun crazy stuff like this, but I was a young 14-year-old in the closet, and I was so scared of everything and didn’t want to come out. So when I did come out, I thought that people would not be shocked and that no one would care. So I came out to the entire school. I was basically “that” person. So I sat down with one of my best friends at the time and she said, ‘Oh, you know you’re going to hell, right?’ So then I picked up my tray and moved tables and sat by myself.”
