Liberty, intelligence, and our nation’s safety is what the Lions Club International stands for. Founded in 1957 the Lions Club motto is leadership, experience, and opportunity (Leo), the organization was for the youth to get involved in a service and social club. In the Mission Hills High School chapter, the young Leo club members work alongside the San Marcos Lions, to improve the world through their leadership and kindness.
“I would be interested in joining Leo club because it would be a great way to network with other people in our community and make new friends. I would have the opportunity to build on my leadership skills and become an active member of our community,” Jimena Romero (10) said.
In the past, Leo club members have volunteered at community events such as the Veteran’s Day ceremony, laying wreaths at the Miramar Cemetery for Memorial Day, and the Double Peak challenge. This year, with COVID-19, volunteer work will come in a different form, however the club hopes to continue to offer community service hours.
“We have offered numerous community service opportunities in the past that could be used for required volunteer hours but are also fun to attend. While we are unsure about future or current volunteer opportunities Leo club is important because you are able to work on leadership skills and having a good work ethic,” said Nathan Vinh (12), Leo club vice president.
Leo club encourages leadership through community service, and allows students to become involved with the community outside of the classroom. During meetings members are informed on upcoming events and are made aware of changes or challenges in the community; the club strives to assist by providing essential services.
“I enjoy giving back to my community any way I can and Leo club has really been a great resource for community service. Leo club is inclusive to all students and being a Leo means you have shown leadership and want to give back to the community,” said Victoria Ngo (11), Leo club director.
With the constant changes of the year, the club is meeting virtually through Zoom. Meetings are the second Thursday of every month at 11:30 a.m. and the links are sent out through the app Remind.
