  • Disastrous weather has been at the forefront of major destruction in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, where Cyclone Idai became a tyrant of mother nature, the rain so vicious that it created a 31-mile wide inlaid ocean. Over 1,000 are feared to be dead, while others have lost their homes and farms. Recovery will be slow as the rain has still not completely receded to examine the full extent of the damage. Already, cases of cholera have been reported which had spread from overflown sewage water and unsanitary conditions.
  • When Trump became president in 2017, one of his main goals was to strengthen the relationship between Israel and the United States. As an example of this goal, this week, the United States recognized Israel’s supposed territory over Golan Heights, a Syrian-occupied land captured by Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967. After the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu excitedly thanked the United States for its recognition. While their bond increases, the statement is met with controversy as the United Nations has repeatedly condemned Israel’s seizure on Golan Heights.
  • With 50 dead in New Zealand after a devastating terrorist attack on two mosques, Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has announced that the country will be banning semi-automatic weapons such as the one used in the shooting. The majority of groups within the country, including the Opposition Party and the main farm lobby group, support the ruling although many of their members own semi-automatic weapons. Once the ban is in place, all military-style semi-automatics (MSSA) and assault rifles will be removed from the market and from consumption. Additionally, New Zealand will be disallowing any part or extra setting that will convert a gun into a MSSA.
